All about Mrs. Presson
Hi! My name is Cathy Presson and I've been teaching pre-kindergarten in Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools for 18 years! I earned my Bachelor's degree in Child and Family Development, along with my Birth-Kindergarten teaching license, at UNC-Charlotte in 1997. In 2001, I earned my National Board Certification in Early Childhood Generalist, and successfully renewed my certification in 2010. While I enjoy watching my students learn and grow in many areas of development across the course of the year, my favorite pre-k area is that of emergent literacy. Pre-kindergarteners make amazing growth across the year, as they learn letters and letter sounds, begin to hear those sounds in words, rhyme, and are able to switch sounds in familiar word families to create new words. They begin to comprehend stories, grow their vocabularies every day, and can dictate stories about their drawings, often adding print to their pictures by writing to sounds they hear. The journey of emergent literacy is truly remarkable! Because emergent literacy is so important and so interesting to me, I decided my next professional step would be to pursue my Master's Degree in Reading Education at East Carolina University. I will finish this May and am excited about what I'm learning! When I complete my degree, I hope to enhance my student's literacy development and experiences in our classroom.
My Family and me
My husband Jeff and I have been married for 12 years, and live in Charlotte, North Carolina, with our 2 daughters, Hannah, 20, and Emily, 10. We love to do things together as a family, whether it's camping in the mountains, walking on the beach, cooking dinner, or going to the movies. Emily is a fifth grader at Mountain Island Lake Academy, and I love teaching at her school! Hannah is a sophomore at Western Carolina University. I miss having her home, but am excited about seeing her grow into the person she's meant to be. When I do get a minute or two to myself, I love to read anything I can get my hands on. My family is very important to me.
